I'm a girl who has picked up and moved from coast to coast (& north past most of Canada). That is... Norfolk, Virginia to Bethel, Alaska. --- This journal is a record of the move, and life in the Tundra.

Sunrise in the snow

Sunrise is slow today but brilliant oranges are everywhere and reflecting off the snow.  It's pretty freaking cool.

And what's even cooler is when you look towards the rising sun, and snow facing away (the far side of a hill or dune) is a frosty blue color.

Blower's out... Again

I love JAX, my car/truck/SUV. But, I have had a couple small issues lately. I'm leaning towards the fact that the extreme cold is at least partially, if not completely at fault.

The popped tired at -25... I have a full-sized spare on it right now. But I still need to get the other tire fixed and the two swapped out.

The block heater shorted out because it was leaking anti-freeze. Now we only found it because it was consistently tripping my house breaker. Each of those is set up for something like 20 volts or so and the block heater should have only been around 5 so we knew there was a problem. The guys at the shop ordered the part but it didn't come in before we all went on vacation for Christmas. Then, about a week after I got back (a few weeks ago) my blower blew up. I can hear the difference in pull on the electrics when I try and turn it on, but it's not blowing any air at all. It's happened last winter and it turned out it was a fuse. A $160 bill later it worked. I bought a box of fuses for just such a situation as this because I know how to change a damn fuze (I drove an old Camry once that needed one switched out at least every few months) but all my fuzes in the passenger compartment were fine. Then I checked the fuzes under the hood. The owners manual was a little vague about those and I can honestly say I hadn't had to mess with them before, but I realized why. Most of the so-called fuzes under the hood are actually relays or a collection of fuzes in one larger pkg. well this is all well and good except for 2 things. 1- the map for the under hood section was partially washed away so it's not all readable. And 2- there's no way to check/test a relay to see if its still functional. So I pulled the "front blower" relay and took it to NAPA, yes we have a NAPA. We ordered the part, because he's never sold one of them before (maybe shoulda tipped me off) but powers of deduction are that it seems like an electrical problem and if its just the blower now working them maybe I had it right... It arrived the next day and it was NOT the problem. So it's been about -10 here for the last week and I don't have heat in my car. I keep forgetting to call the shop and see about when I can take it in. I just need to call and leave a message this weekend and let them call me back. It's not on my weekend to-do list.

"Poor"

It's an expression up here, like saying 'poor baby' or 'oh man'. You can use it as a sympathy... "Baby's got colic', "oh poor". 'Or a woman slipped and fell on the ice today' "poor".  I recognized it long ago as a Bush-Alaska-ism but hadn't started using it until recently. Unlike the non verbal eyebrows and nose scrunch. That I found myself using almost immediately (eyebrows raise briefly for yes, nose scrunch for no and shoulder shrug for I don't know). I suppose I'm more of a non-verbal person.

Happy New Year!

I'm warm on the east coast but wanted to wish everyone a great new year.
