Roller Derby!?!?

I was informed today that Bethel might be starting their very own Roller Derby League. I have virtually no idea what would be involved with this as I have absolutely no experience with Roller Derby. Can anybody fill me in so I can start to decide if this is something I want to get into?

  1. There are some interesting movies about Roller Derby that date back into the 70s...
Basically, its roller-skating on a curved track, in teams, with the goal of aggressively attacking members of the other team to take them out - leaving the last girl skating. Usually the girls have nicknames that allude to their personality traits - Bruiser Babe and Patti KickAss...

  2. Most roller derby leagues (at least in the lower 48) are governed by the rules of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. The tend to be run as not-profit membership organizations. Also, unlike the roller derby from the 1970's and earlier that was almost like professional wrestling on roller skates, this is amateur, not as violent as the old televised stuff and competitions are mainly on flat tracks (such as gyms, vacant retail spaces, armories) because the banked tracks are really expensive.

As far as I understand it, points are scored when a certain member of one team laps a member of another team and the other people are trying to help their scorer lap the other team while stopping the other team from doing it to their team. If you really want to know the whole thing in detail, you can contact my big sister (Rachel Lamb) on facebook. She's the captain of the B-squad for the Assault City (Syracuse team) and would be more than willing to talk to you (she also used to chaperone conferences at May Memorial, so you may remember her from that).
